Imagining the Other: Creative Writing to Mitigate Bias (1.10.22)
Presented By: Dr. Kathryn Kirkland
Brief Overview/Description:
Sometimes patients behave in ways that may trigger unconscious biases in health care professionals, which can result in unequal treatment and poor patient experiences, which are then perpetuated by the use of stigmatizing language in the medical record. Creative writing exercises are known to promote perspective-taking, which in turn can decrease reliance on stereotypes to judge others and strengthen the link between self and other. This session identifies particular patient/behavioral challenges in HIV care and includes a short creative writing exercise designed to enhance perspective taking.
