Education Packet

HIV/AIDS in New England – This is a compilation of recent fact sheets and other resources about HIV in the New England region. You may wish to customize it to meet the needs or interests of particular groups, such as event participants, providers, patients, clients, or the general public. So please feel free to distribute all or part of this packet as either a printout or PDF.

Regional and State Data

HIV in the United States by Region (CDC) – This resource provides data on HIV incidence, diagnoses, knowledge of HIV status, and viral suppression in the following five regions: Northeast, Midwest, South, West, and U.S. Dependent Areas. The Northeast region includes the six New England states, plus New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Diagnoses of HIV Infection in the United States and Dependent Areas, 2020 (CDC) – This surveillance report includes detailed information about new HIV diagnoses, prevalence, and deaths in the U.S., including some breakdowns by geographic region.

Estimated HIV Incidence and Prevalence in the United States, 2015-2019 (CDC) – This report provides estimates of the number of new HIV infections and the total number of persons living with HIV during each year from 2015 through 2019. It includes tables that present data on HIV incidence and prevalence among adults and adolescents, with breakdowns by sex at birth, age, race/ethnicity, transmission category, and region of residence, including the Northeast. An appendix focuses on the estimated incidence and prevalence of HIV infection among adults and adolescents living in Ending the HIV Epidemic Phase 1 jurisdictions.

Monitoring Selected National HIV Prevention and Care Objectives by Using HIV Surveillance Data United States and 6 Dependent Areas, 2020 (CDC) – This report presents the results of focused analyses of U.S. HIV surveillance data to measure progress toward ending the HIV epidemic. It includes information on the stage of HIV disease at time of diagnosis, linkage to HIV medical care, retention in care and viral suppression, use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), deaths and survival of persons diagnosed with HIV, and perinatal HIV infections. For some measures, data are broken down by area of residence, gender, age, race/ethnicity, and transmission category.

Estimated HIV Incidence and Prevalence in the United States, 2010-2019 (CDC) – This slide set summarizes trends in HIV incidence during the 2010s, with breakdowns by region, age, sex, race/ethnicity, and transmission category. Data for 2019 is also provided on knowledge of HIV status, as well as HIV prevalence in the 50 states, District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

HIV Infection, Stage 3 (AIDS), 2020 (CDC) – This slide set summarizes trends in AIDS diagnoses and deaths from 1985 to 2020, with breakdowns by age, sex, race/ethnicity, transmission category, and region. Data on cumulative AIDS diagnoses and deaths through 2020, and AIDS data for Metropolitan Statistical Areas are also provided.

HIV Mortality: 2020 (CDC) – This slide set presents an analysis – in a series of charts, graphs, and maps – of trends in the rates and distribution of deaths among people with HIV. Breakdowns are provided by race/ethnicity, age, gender, and geographic region.

AtlasPlus (CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention) – This online tool gives users the ability to create customized tables, maps, and charts using more than 10 years of CDC surveillance data on HIV, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and tuberculosis. AtlasPlus also provides data on indicators of social determinants of health, thereby allowing users to view social and economic data together with surveillance data for each disease.

HIV Surveillance in Urban and Nonurban Areas 2018 (Preliminary) (CDC) – This slide set presents regional variations of diagnoses of HIV and AIDS among adults and adolescents in the United States.

Diagnoses of HIV Infection Among Adults and Adolescents in Metropolitan Statistical Areas: United States and Puerto Rico, 2018 (CDC) – This slide set presents HIV surveillance data for the U.S. and Puerto Rico among adults and adolescents in metropolitan statistical areas.

HIV Legal Landscape (CDC) – CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention systematically collects and assesses information about HIV statutes and regulatory frameworks to help determine whether these act as barriers or facilitators to effective HIV prevention. CDC summarizes in text, tables, and maps state-specific data on the following: state laws that address high-impact HIV prevention efforts, HIV and STD criminal laws, minors consent laws, laboratory reporting laws, and perinatal HIV testing laws.

AIDSVu Regional Data: Northeast – AIDSVu is an interactive online mapping tool that visualizes the impact of the HIV epidemic on communities across the U.S. Please note that, in addition to the six New England states, AIDSVu’s Northeast region includes the states of New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. State-by-state data and limited county data for each New England state are available at the following links: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Connecticut Resources

Connecticut Department of Public Health HIV Surveillance Program – This is the home page for the state’s HIV/AIDS data. It includes a “Quick Stats” section with information on new HIV diagnoses and HIV prevalence in the state for the most recent available year.

Epidemiological Profile of HIV: Connecticut – This is Connecticut’s most recent available detailed profile of HIV in the state, with information on HIV testing, new HIV diagnoses, prevalence, deaths, continuum of care, behavioral risks, STDs, and hepatitis C, among other topics. Data breakdowns are also provided by city or town, race/ethnicity, gender, age, and transmission category.

HIV in Connecticut – This fact sheet summarizes recent HIV data for the state, including new HIV diagnoses, HIV prevalence, and deaths, with some breakdowns by transmission category, race/ethnicity, age, and gender.

Connecticut HIV Statistics – This page has links to many statewide data tables and reports summarizing: trends in HIV and AIDS diagnoses; affected population groups by gender, race/ethnicity, transmission category, and age; HIV prevalence; the continuum of care; and other topics.

AIDSVu Local Data: Connecticut – This graphically rich, interactive resource is from Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health. It includes extensive state and county-level data, with demographic breakdowns of HIV prevalence, new HIV diagnoses, late HIV diagnoses, and HIV mortality. Information is also provided on PrEP use, racial/ethnic disparities in HIV prevalence, HIV testing, the continuum of care, social determinants of health, and STDs. Maine Resources

Maine Department of Health and Human Services Infectious Disease Prevention Program – This is the home page for Maine’s HIV, STD, and Viral Hepatitis Program. It includes links to HIV and STD surveillance reports; information about HIV testing, PEP, PrEP, and treatment as prevention; and guidance and recommendations on HIV, viral hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections.

Maine HIV Surveillance Report: 2021 – This fact sheet has information on trends in HIV diagnoses; new diagnoses by gender, race/ethnicity, and transmission category; HIV prevalence; and selected characteristics of people with HIV in Maine.

Maine Integrated HIV Prevention and Care Plan: 2022 – This plan outlines the goals and strategies that are being used to address the HIV epidemic in Maine from 2022 through 2026. The key goals of the plan include: prompt diagnosis and treatment of HIV; prevention of new HIV infections through treatment, biomedical approaches, and harm reduction; and rapid response to potential HIV outbreaks.

New Hampshire Resources

New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services – Most state-specific resources on HIV, including epidemiologic reports, are found on the agency’s HIV Prevention page.

New Hampshire STD/HIV Surveillance Program: 5-Year Data Summary Report, 2017-2021 – This report includes HIV and AIDS case data for the years 2017 through 2021, with breakdowns by gender, age, race/ethnicity, and county or city. Similar data for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are also included.

New Hampshire Integrated Prevention and Care Plan: 2017-2021 – This document includes a needs assessment with state and county data, an integrated prevention and care plan, and provisions for monitoring and improving the state’s HIV prevention and care efforts.

Rhode Island HIV, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Viral Hepatitis, and Tuberculosis Surveillance Report: 2020 – This report provides and extensive overview of HIV and other infectious diseases in Rhode Island. It also discusses the geographical distribution of HIV and STDs in the state, and addresses disease risk and prevalence in different racial/ethnic groups, women, gay and bisexual men, and youth.

Rhode Island Integrated Prevention & Care Comprehensive and Statewide Coordinated Statement of Need Plan: CY 2017-2021 – This document provides a detailed summary of HIV/AIDS in Rhode Island, together with a needs assessment for the state.

2018 Rhode Island HIV Epidemiologic Profile with Surrogate Data – This is a detailed HIV/AIDS surveillance report for the state, with summary data and breakdowns by gender, transmission category, race/ethnicity, and deaths.
